Most of us play by most of the rules.
We want the HVAC on during the summer so, we pay the utility bill right? I don’t think there are too many people who are one hundred percent compliant when it comes to minding the regulations of our society.
But, by and large we all try to stick to agreed upon norms. Then there are those who are responsible for compliance of said rules. Thankfully, the vast majority of those intrusted to enforce the rules are trained professionals. Then there are those who are so drawn to wielding authority that they lose total sight of what the rules are for. I live in a neighborhood with a Homeowners Association. Much of the country does. The idea is to have sufficient standards so all of our property values are increased and not diminished by a neighbor with a junk yard. It makes sense. But of course, in the wrong hands, the HOA gets stupid. They are getting very stupid with my neighbor accross the street. This guy was attempting to teach his son how to trim a hedge. Believe it or not, it takes a bit of practice. Unfortunately, the young man cut part of the hedge too short so my neighbor had to even it out. The result was that the HVAC condenser cabinet can be seen from the street now. The HOA just went into immediate hysterics. They have literally been harassing my neighbor throughout the intervening weeks. The HOA is threatening all sorts of action from fines to litigation. I told the guy to ignore the HOA and not pay a dang dime but just let the hedge grow back. If he got anymore beef, I would represent him legally.
