It feels like I might have missed out a bit by not pursuing a more normal family trajectory.
My wife and I met in grad school.
One of the big attractions for both of us was how focused and driven we were about our prospective careers. We went at those careers like gangbusters for over a decade before we realized that we were in our forties. Then, we realized that we sort of preferred to have a life without children. After much discussion and consideration, we chose to be a family together with our animals solely. Due to not having children, we have been able to be really free to travel a great deal. The main mode of transportation was commercial flight. But, the grew old with all the hassle involved. Plus, I just hate the HVAC in airports and inside the plane itself. I can never be comfortable. One is far too hot while the other is far too cold. So now, we primarily just travel by our small SUV. I always know the air conditioning and the heater in the car will be comfortable. However, HVAC takes precedence when we stop along the road for the night. Both my wife and I choose our lodging based on a specific type of HVAC method. We prefer those big wall units you can see from outside. I have never spent an uncomfortable night where those HVAC units were in place. Plus, they are always clean and reasonably priced for travelers. It’s sort of weird how much of a role HVAC plays in our travels.
